A Day of Remembrance

Today is Memorial Day, a day of remembrance for the men and women who died in service to the United States.

In honor of Memorial Day, we are departing from our regular format of featuring a Blogger of Note every Monday. We'll be back with a new BON on Wednesday.

American Patriotism is something I feel strongly about. Those of us who don't have anyone serving in the military need to remember those who are and the sacrifices made not only by the men and women in uniform but the enormous sacrifices made every day by their families.

I wanted to share two posts I have written recently on my blog, It's a Jungle Out There about some of those people. One is about the women fliers who served in World War II, and the other is my connection to a man who was a prisoner of war in Viet Nam.

This is also the last weekend in May; the unofficial beginning of summer. A time for graduations, weddings, cookouts, and vacations when many of us are fortunate enough to spend time with family and loved ones.

So if you are one of the lucky ones, please take a moment this weekend to stop and think about those men and women who served this country and especially think about those who are in uniform now who may be far away from home and family.

  1. Thank you for remembering the families of those who serve as well. I volunteer with the Gold Star Wives and so many times the families are forgotten.

  3. I went to a parade this morning. I got really emotional watching the veterans walk by. I feel very strongly about American Patriotism too and wish that people could feel what I feel. God bless America.

  4. somehow I missed our little memorial day parade. walking the dog early this morning i noticed droppings of candy, and trash cans filled with blue plastic cups, white paper plates and red napkins. the flag outside the fire station fly at half mast.

    and I cried.

yes, its a day of remembrance...

some signed on with the promise of a brighter future, others felt a patriotic urge. all had hope in their heart. whatever the reason, they are all hero's.

  6. Let's not forgot to honor our gay soldiers who, forced to serve hidden, still bravely put their lives on the line to protect freedoms that they do not themselves get to share.

    God bless all our soldiers.

  7. Thanks for this, Sandy. I just reread your post about the POW and how you followed his story and connected with him. I loved it all over again.

  12. I see many men (and women) on street corners with signs that say "out of work vet - anything helps." Veterans that have fought for our country should not be left homeless or jobless - it's a disgrace to them and our country. These people were prepared to give the ultimate sacrifice for their country - and they're left with not much of anything. It's very sad.
